NEW COURTHOUSE FOR CHARLEVILLE

Largest State building work to be undertaken in the country for some years received Executive approval yesterday.

It was the erection, at a cost of £20,572, of a new two-storey brick building at Charleville for use as courthouse and public offices. It will replace a wooden structure destroyed by fire. The work is the main part of a £25,863 works programme to be carried out by day labour. Other works in the programme are: New boiler house at Ipswich Mental Hospital £2270, additions State school, Marian, near Mackay, £1450; additional accommodation for patients and nursery, Blackall maternity hospital, £833; additions between female wards, Dunwich Benevolent Asylum, £427; extensions police station, Mingela, £311.

Background

The first Charleville Court House was built in 1875. It was destroyed by fire in December 1940 and a new building opened in November 1941.
