The courthouse at Thursday Island is being enlarged in a manner which is a disgrace to the Government and those who recommended it, as well as to the community (says the Torres Straits Islands Pilot),
The Government are short of funds and cannot at present spend much money, they say. If so, then why not have let the courthouse remain as it was until funds were available to erect a new building or alter the present building in a decent manner.
The Thursday Island people are a tolerant lot, erstwhile they would have had a look around the building and razed it to the ground before permitting such an ugly “job” to be perpetrated upon them. And why is the work being done by prison labor, we ask? Are prisoners to supersede the tradesmen?
