Safe Blowing

Safe blowers were foiled in an attempt to rob the State Government Insurance Office, Brisbane-street, Ipswich early Saturday morning, and decamped empty handed. The discovery was made by the charwoman Miss MacDonald, at 6.15 o’clock, on Saturday morning. She found the office in confusion and the door of the safe bent and partially opened.

[…] It is not quite certain how the thief or thieves entered the building; all the doors and windows were locked and nothing had been apparently forced. At the back of the office there are two large windows about 10 feet from the ground, the catches of which are broken and can easily be shaken open, and there is a ladder in the yard quite handy; but there is also a door at the back leading into the store room, which forms the basement of the building and from which one has access to the whole building. The key of this door is always left in the lock on the inside.

Background

The Queensland Government established the State Government Insurance Office in 1917. SGIO was responsible for insuring state assets and offering life insurance and general insurance to the Queensland public.
