New Building Opened
The Mayor proceeded at 4 p.m. to attend the function of opening the new Ambulance Buildings. Though steady rain was falling, 250 people were present, the country being well represented. The Mayoress, in the presence of the visitors in the plant room, pulled the cord automatically opening the folding doors, and declared the building opened amid cheers. Mrs Kirkup, wife of the Shire Council chairman, unfurled the Ambulance flag presented by lady ambulance certificated bearers. All then returned to the playroon, where the president of the Ambulance Committee, Mr H. B. Black, presented Mrs. Marryatt (Mayoress) with a pretty memento brooch and gold key, with the inscription "QATB" and a pendant ambulance cross.
[...] In their speeches they referred to the progress of the ambulance movement in Mackay, paying a high compliment to those responsible for such a splendid building, which it was estimated, with the land, represented a value of £2500. They referred also, to the unique position of the brigade, which was established six years ago. They had 240 cases the first year, with a mileage travelled of 436, and last year they treated 1983 cases, with a mileage of 7547. They now possessed a splendid establishment and plant, and had never been in debt, and all being paid for the brigade still had cash in hand enough to pay its way.
[...] The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, and inspected the building.
