FREE BEER AT HOTEL OPENING

WINTON. April 15. - Free beer will be turned on to mark the official opening next Thursday of the new £190,000 North Gregory Hotel, built by the Winton Shire Council.

The Winton Shire Clerk (Mr R. Palmer) said today that the opening of the hotel would be one of the highlights of the three-day show festivities, which would end on Saturday.

The festivities will begin on Thursday morning with a procession of floats depicting the progress of Winton and Queensland. At 11 am, the Minister for Public Instruction (Mr Devries) win perform the opening ceremony at the hotel which is Australia's most modem country hotel.

Background

Established in 1879, the North Gregory Hotel – the Queen of the Outback – has an impressive history. The first public performance of Waltzing Matilda was here on April 6 1895, while clandestine 1920s meetings saw the launch of a little airline named QANTAS… Lyndon Johnson stayed here, when forced to ditch his plane during World War II, and the dining room features original etchings by acclaimed artist Daphne Mayo.
