Gympie Radio Station

In conjunction with a patriotic concert, the new Gympie broadcasting station 4GY was officially opened in the presence of a large audience in the Olympia Theatre on Monday night. The ceremonial speeches were made during the course of an entertaining programme, and it was stated that the new station would afford a necessary improvement in radio reception in the Gympie district. "It represents," said Mr. B. H. Corser, M.H.R., who performed the official opening, "a milestone in the progressive development of this district." In the present condition of world affairs, said Mr. J. B. Chandler (Lord Mayor of Brisbane), who is chairman of directors of the Gympie Broadcasting Co. Ltd., it was essential that everyone should be within reach of a static-free local station. Reports since received from all parts of the district have demonstrated perfect reception from 4GY. It was announced by Mr. R. S. Turner (chief announcer) that the proceeds from the concert would be devoted to the Gympie Liberty Appeal. He expressed the hope that the programmes from the station, now on the air, would give pleasurable entertainment for many years. The ceremonial speeches interspersed a lively programme in which a most admirable feature was the choral performance by 250 children of the combined primary schools. In addition to singing the National Anthem at the outset, they contributed eleven choral numbers.
