Robert Logan Jack Notebooks
Background

Scottish-born Robert Logan Jack made important contributions to Queensland geology after first being appointed Geological Surveyor for North Queensland in 1876. Three years later he became Government Geologist and until he resigned in 1899, Jack carried out extensive exploratory and geological work throughout the colony. It was largely his understanding of the geological structure of western Queensland that led to the successful tapping of artesian water supplies. Jack also mapped the Bowen coalfield, reported on major Queensland goldfields and conducted detailed investigations of many other mineral fields. In collaboration with Robert Etheridge Junior, Jack published a three-volume The Geology and Palaeontology of Queensland and New Guinea in 1892, just one of his many works on Queensland geology which remain important sources of information. Jack also published a significant two-volume history of Queensland, Northmost Australia, just before his death in 1921.
