THE WINTON TRAGEDY.

Death of Methodist Minister.

WINTON. October 1. Probably the most pitiful tragedy in the annuls of Winton, was the death yesterday of Rev. Samuel Hook, by strychnine poisoning.

Details are meagre, and official information is positively refused.

It is gathered that at about 3 p.m. the attendish[sic] neighbours was alerted to moans issuing from the parsonage.

On proceeding there, Rev. Hook was found writhing in agony. Symptoms of strychnine poisoning were indicated and homely remedies were applied, pending the arrival of the doctor who ordered his removal to hospital.

A post morten was made this morning of which the result was unavailable but probably an analysis will follow. The funeral this afternoon was very largely attended. Rev. Munro, who came especially from Longreach, officiated.

It was well known for some time deceased was not having a happy time financially, but recent indications were more favourable. Last Saturday the deceased conducted a children's sports, in aid of the church, and was looking forward to a picture benefit tonight. He had purchased poison a week ago, alleged to destroy a suffering animal.

Interest is centred on the inquiry which will probably be held in a few days.

The Rev. Gribble, Anglican Minister, opened a donation list for the widow and three infants, which is meeting with a good response.
